What Is NOAA Weather Radio?
NOAA Weather Radio is a free weather warning and information broadcasting service provided by the National Weather Service. It continually broadcasts area weather information 24 hours a day, 7 days a week in the VHF radio spectrum. NOAA Weather Radio also uses a special digital warning system that activates receivers automatically with an audio or visual alarm to warn people in the area of severe weather warnings.

In addition to severe and threatening weather warnings, NOAA Weather Radio is also used to provide other civil emergency warnings and information such as Amber Alerts and natural as well as man-made disasters. In our area, important coastal and off-shore weather information is also routinely provided.

Do I Need A Special Receiver to Get These Broadcasts and Warnings?
Yes. NOAA Weather Radio receivers are designed to make use of the special features and signals broadcast by the NWS transmitters. These signals can be used to activate the receiver and make it sound an alarm when severe weather is forecast in specific neighborhoods and communities. The alarm functions much like a smoke detector. It will alert you and even awaken you at night to give you an early warning of impending severe weather events.

How Much Do NOAA Weather Radio Receivers Cost?
NOAA Weather Radio Receivers are inexpensive and affordable ranging in price from about $30 to $90 depending on the number of features you want or need.

Where Can I Purchase one?
NOAA Weather Radio Receivers can be purchased in electronics stores, such as Best Buy and Radio Shack, at some department stores like Wal Mart, and, of course, online.

Are They Hard to Set Up?
No. Complete instructions for setting the receiver up to receive signals from your local NWS transmitter are included with the unit. Each receiver is capable of tuning in the proper frequency for your area. Setting the alarm to respond to warnings and watches in your area is also very easy to do.

Who Should Have One?
TopsailWeather highly recommends that every home should have a working NOAA Weather Radio Receiver just as every home should have a working smoke detector. It has been documented time after time that an NOAA Weather Radio Receiver has been responsible for giving their owners warning in time to save their lives. An NOAA Weather Radio Receiver is just one more important tool people can use to make themselves safer.
